Growing up in Pakistan, we watched the people we love make financial decisions in the dark. Our parents saved money the only way they knew how — and had no way to know whether it was actually working for them. Our uncles invested their retirement savings based on tips from friends — and lost everything. Our cousins took on crushing debt for weddings because nobody showed them how to plan.
These weren't careless people. They were intelligent, hard-working Pakistanis who simply didn't have access to the right tools and information. Every finance app we downloaded was built for Americans — talking about 401(k)s and IRAs, showing dollar signs, recommending products that don't exist here. The few Pakistani apps that existed were glorified sales funnels, pushing products that benefited the company, not the user.
We didn't want to build another app. We wanted to build the app we wished our parents had when we were growing up.
